How To Play Hnefatafl
Hnefatafl is an asymmetric strategy game. One side defends the king and tries to get him to safety. The other side attacks and tries to capture him before he escapes.

Step 1: Know The Objective
Protect the king and guide him to an escape square.
Trap the king before he reaches safety.
Step 2: Learn How Pieces Move
Pieces move any number of open squares in straight lines, horizontally or vertically. They do not move diagonally, and they do not jump over other pieces.
Step 3: Learn How Captures Work
Most pieces are captured by being trapped between two hostile anchors in a straight line. Those anchors can be enemy pieces and, depending on the ruleset, special squares such as the throne or corners.
Step 4: Understand Special Squares
- Throne: The center square where the king begins.
- Corners: In many variants, these are the king's escape points.
- Edges: In Tablut, the king may escape by reaching the board edge.
Step 5: Pick A Ruleset
Modern Hnefatafl players often use one of three starting points: Fetlar, Copenhagen, or Tablut. They share the same core idea, but differ in king capture rules and escape rules.
Quick Tips For First Games
- Open lines for the king before pushing him too far.
- Do not leave defenders isolated where they can be surrounded easily.
- As attackers, close routes early and control the center.
- Watch the throne and corners because they matter strategically.
